Demolition Derby

Equipment Rules

 

  1. All glass must be removed.  All lights, side mirrors, light bulbs, hub caps, grill, side chrome, pot metal, carpet, head liners, back seats, plastic and fiberglass must be removed before being admitted to the track area.  Side chrome shall mean anything below the window frame.  A car with a sun roof may be run with special features (glass must be removed) but the hole must be covered with screen or metal.  Anything flammable except front seats must be removed before reaching the exhibit area.  
  2. This event is open to men and women who have a valid driverÕs license.  Drivers must be at least 18 years of age, or if 16 or 17 years of age must have notarized permission by parent/guardian.  Driver must furnish his/her own car.  All drivers and pit personnel must sign waiver of release of liability before entering pit area or track.  Entries will be accepted up to one hour prior to race time.  All drivers and pit people must attend meeting prior to race time.
  3. Frames must remain stock.  Suspension must remain stock.  No welding suspension components, including upper and lower arms, tie rods, etc.
  4. Seat belts and shoulder harnesses are required.  Factory installed or racing approved.  Belts and harness must be fastened with either 6 inch diameter by 3/16 inch steel plate under the floor or chained around the frame.  Shoulder straps must be factory installed or anchored with a minimum of 2 inch diameter washer on top of the roof.  All belts will be anchored with a minimum of 2 inch diameter washer on top of the roof.  All belts will be anchored with a minimum of 5/16 inch diameter bolt or chain or factory installed to the floor.  NO RATCHET STYLE SEAT BELTS OR HARNESSES OR FIBERGLASS SEATS ALLOWED.
  5. All doors must be securely fastened shut by means of strong metal bar clamp (minimum 3/16 inch) or chained with a bolt.  Only 3/16 inch or larger welded type chain is permissible.  All bolts used for connecting chains must have washers.  Chain or clamps are not required if the side iron extends the full length of the door.
  6. Drivers door must be reinforced with a minimum of 6 inch channel iron 3/16 inch thick.  The minimum side iron length must extend 6 inches on each side of the door.  The iron must be bolted with a minimum of two ¾ inch minimum to 1 ½ inch maximum bolts, which extend through the inner panels and have a minimum of 6ÓX6ÓX3/16Ó backing plate front and rear.  Ends of channel iron must be cut at a 45 degree angle.  Side iron on right door is optional.
  7. The rear cross brace must be installed from door post to door post behind the driverÕs seat at least half way up from the floor.  The cross brace must be made of minimum 2 inch pipe and bolted with minimum of two 3/8 inch bolts.  Front cross brace is optional.
  8. Trunks must be empty of all debris, spare tires, rims, parts, etc.  Wagons must have spare tire flap removed or hole cut in it big enough to see in.
  9. Trunk lids, tail gates, and hoods may be secured shut with bolts or chains as follows:
    1. Bolts must not extend 4 inches past car skin.
    2. Chains must be a minimum of 3/16 inch welded type.  Chains must be connected by a bolt no smaller than 3/8 inch with washers.  Larger chains and bolts are acceptable as long as they are not used for reinforcing.  (Tech crewÕs decision)
    3. No added or reinforced body bolts.
    4. Hoods can be bolted a maximum of four places.  Bolt size must be a minimum of 1/2  inch to a maximum of 1 inch.  Only two bolts to hood and frame vertical.  Washers not to exceed 8 inches.  Chains and bolts may be intermixed to equal five.
    5. Trunks may be fastened in a maximum of four places.  Bolt size of 3/16 inch minimum to 1 inch maximum with washer 8 inch minimum.
  10. No cooling system other than stock is permitted.  Radiators and/or fans may be removed.  Expansion tanks of stock materials are allowed instead of radiator.  Radiator and expansion tanks must remain in the engine compartment as close to the stock location as possible.
  11. Transmission coolers, other than stock, must be in the back seat area below window level.  Transmission cooler and all hoses must be adequately shielded from all drivers.  A hole must be cut in the floor to allow for runoff.
  12. The make of tires and wheels is optional.  (No duals or chains may be used.)  All drive tires must be covered to the bottom of the body.  No mag or alloy wheels allowed.  No bead locks.  No snow tires with metal studs.  All season mud tires allowed.
  13. Batteries may be relocated inside the car.  Battery MUST BE FULLY ENCLOSED AND SECURELY FASTENED to the floor in such a manner that it cannot come loose.  All battery boxes must be strapped with a chain or seat belts across the top and anchored to the floor with adequate bolts.  The exception is the steel battery box where no strap is needed.  Batteries must be covered with floor mat, inner tube, or something nonflammable.
  14. Bumpers may be collapsed and welded shut.  NO REINFORCING PERMITTED ON THE CARS.
  15. When repairing or replacing any damaged cars, no material stronger than what you are repairing or replacing may be used.  The tech crewÕs decision on reinforcement is final.  Double centering with washers on wheels is acceptable.
  16. You must have a suitable flame arrester on the carburetor.  A large hole at least 6 inches in diameter must be put in the hood for fire extinguisher access.  (Not over the flame arrester.)  Holes in firewall must be covered.
  17. No fluids or any other flammable liquids will be in the car other than the gas tank.
  18. No more than a 10 inch hole for the shifter can be used.
  19. Fire extinguishers inside the car are optional.
  20. No suicide knobs allowed.
  21. Electric fuel pumps are optional.  If an electric fuel pump is used, it must have an on/off switch.  The switch will be positioned so that ON is up and OFF is down.  The switch must be centrally located on the dash or console.  It must be in a yellow square at least 4 inches in size.  The ON/OFF position must be clearly marked.  There must be 4ÓX4Ó letter E after the cars number.
  22. Cars must have at least two working brakes upon entering the track.
  23. Horns must be disconnected.
  24. Car numbers must be painted on the top of the car and on the front doors.  Numbers will be at least 18 inches high and the outline of the numbers will be at least 2 inches wide.  Make your numbers clear and readable and contrasting to the car color.  Use your choice of number, if that number is already being used, you will have to put a letter behind it.  Slogans, advertising, or painting may be placed anywhere on the car except the front doors and right above the front doors on the roof.  NO PROFANITY, this is a family event.
  25. Motor mounts and transmission mounts may be strengthened with bolts, welds or chains.  The rear end may be locked.  Motor straps welded to the frame and bolted to the motor are allowed.  Straps can have a maximum thickness of 2ÓX ¼ Òflat bar only.  Limit to two straps on the motor.  This rule is optional.
  26. Wheel wells may be trimmed.  No shackles or extended or reversed spring shackles will be allowed.
  27. All exhaust pipes must point downward toward the ground or pointed upward coming out the hood.
  28. You must relocate the gas tank to the rear interior area.  You must put a sizeable hole in the stock gas tank or totally remove it.  A jerry can or boat tank is recommended as a suitable replacement.  (NO THINNER OR PAINT OR SIMILAR CONTAINERS ARE ALLOWED.)  Tanks must be secured so there is no movement, do not use bungee cords for this.  If tank is not secure, you will not be running.  Tanks must have secure caps and be leak proof.  Metal flash shields installed between all tanks and drivers are optional.  The gas lines and fittings must be leak proof.  A hole must be made in the floor board for fuel run-off.
  29. Cars must have one bar attached in center of windshield from roof down to dash area to prevent hood from coming in.
  30. Radiator overflow hoses must be pointing at the ground and fastened so they can not shoot water towards officials or drivers.
  31. Header pipes must be pointing straight up and cannot be aimed toward front of car.
  32. If you have a hole in the firewall it should be covered.
  33. Safety belts are required.
  34. DOT approved helmets are mandatory.  Any driver using an open face helmet will not be covered by insurance if a facial injury occurs.
  35. Safety glasses or shield is recommended.
  36. Mandatory:  You must wear long pants and shirt.  Fire suit is recommended.
  37. No alcoholic beverages or drugs allowed in the track area.
  38. No pit persons allowed on track.
  39. Management has the right to disqualify a car/driver at anytime.  Any person on the track or causing trouble and not complying with the rules will be asked to leave.  We can have you escorted off or have you arrested and you can be banned from running or being in the pit area at future events.
  40. Protests must be made no later than 5-minutes after the heat in question.  No protests will be taken after the feature event and only the drivers may protest.
  41. Officials will re-inspect the top cars.  Anything done to a car to make it illegal after inspection will be disqualified.
  42. If you reinforce anything besides what is stated in these rules, it can be considered illegal and you will not run.  OfficialsÕ decisions are final.
  43. DECISIONS OF THE TRACK OFFICIALS ARE FINAL!!!
  44. Remember:  Navajo County Fair is a family event.  Please demonstrate good sportsmanship and have fun!!!

Demolition Derby

General Rules

 

  1. Entry Fee:  There will be a $50 entry fee which is added to the prize money.  Your entry fee registers your car and gives you 5 admission passes through the back demolition gate (these passes are not general fair passes; they are for the demolition derby only).  These five passes are for you and 4 additional people.
  2. Allowable Vehicles - Any year sedan, station wagon or coupe type automobile.  No pick-up trucks, vans, four wheel drives, panels, convertibles, carry-alls, limousines, hearses or ambulances are allowed.
  3. No building cars at the track.
  4. Teaming up will be grounds for disqualification.  Judges, officials and the flagmanÕs decisions are final.
  5. A red flag means stop your vehicle at once.  INTENTIONAL MOVEMENT OR DISREGARD FOR THE RED FLAG WILL AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFY THAT CAR.
  6. Helmets, shoulder straps and seat belts must be worn at all times while on the track.  No body parts outside the car.  Full face helmets, goggles or face shields are optional.
  7. Driver door hits should be avoided if possible.  Frequent violations will be reason for disqualification.
  8. The one minute rule will be in effect.  All cars will be watched and timed with a stop watch.  Anyone not making contact with an active competitor will be disqualified.  Obvious sandbaggers can be black flagged prior to the one minute expiration.  Judges, officials and flagmanÕs decisions are final.
  9. Any person who voluntarily exits his or her car, removes their seat belt or waves off a hit prior to the conclusion of the event shall be eliminated from further competition in the event.  CAR FIRE IS THE EXCEPTION.
  10. The winner of this event is the last car to deliver an AGGRESSIVE BLOW to an ACTIVE COMPETITOR.
  11. All cars will display a flag mounted at the driverÕs window.  At the time a driver declares himself or is declared ÒDEADÓ he will lower the flag and not move until the conclusion of the event.  Any car with a flag is legal game whether it is moving or not.
  12. Any vehicle declared ÒDEADÓ must stop moving at once.
